💍 How to Get Married in Skyrim: A Step-by-Step Guide
Marriage in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim isn’t just a romantic perk — it’s a rewarding gameplay mechanic that provides food, gold, a home, and companionship. Whether you’re a fierce Nord warrior or a sneaky Khajiit thief, settling down has its benefits. But before you walk down the aisle in Tamriel, here’s everything you need to know.

🛍️ What You Need: The Amulet of Mara
Before love can bloom, you’ll need the Amulet of Mara, an enchanted necklace that signals to the world you’re open to marriage.
How to Get It:
- Reliable Method: Visit Maramal in the Temple of Mara in Riften.
- Ask him about Mara, the Goddess of Love.
- Continue the conversation to ask about marriage.
- Once you show interest, he’ll offer to sell you the Amulet of Mara for 200 gold.
- Other Methods: It can also appear as a random loot drop, but this is unreliable if you’re ready to marry soon.
🔑 You must talk to Maramal before marriage options become available — just wearing the amulet won’t work until you’ve had the conversation.
🎯 What to Do Next
- Equip the Amulet of Mara — it goes around your neck and visibly signals your interest in marriage.
- Speak to eligible NPCs who like you.
- Look for flirtatious or friendly dialogue such as:
- “It’s a fine day with you around.”
- “Is that an Amulet of Mara you’re wearing?”
- These lines indicate the NPC may be open to marriage if certain conditions are met (quests, favors, or friendship).
- Propose — If the dialogue options change to mention marriage, you’re good to go. Accept their interest, and they’ll agree to marry you.
🏛️ The Wedding
- After agreeing to marry, return to Maramal and set up the wedding ceremony.
- The wedding takes place at the Temple of Mara in Riften the next day between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m..
- Important: Don’t miss the ceremony! If you do, your partner might get upset and cancel the marriage.
- If that happens, apologize and try again.
Once married, your spouse moves in with you — or you can move in with them if they own property.
💡 Benefits of Marriage
- Your spouse cooks you a daily meal that boosts stamina and health regeneration.
- You receive a daily gold allowance from their business.
- You gain a “Lover’s Comfort” bonus, improving your skill growth rate.
- You have the option to live in their home or have them move into yours.
