The game takes place in Raccoon City, a midwestern American town that has been overrun by the Umbrella Corporation's T-virus. The player assumes the role of Jill Valentine, a former member of the S.T.A.R.S. police force who is trying to escape the city before it is destroyed by a missile strike. As Jill tries to flee the city, she encounters a new creature created by Umbrella, called Nemesis.
